Rancho Santa Margarita is a city in the United States Orange County. It is one of Orange County’s youngest cities. It was incorporated in 2000 and became Orange County’s 33rd municipality. The population of Rancho Santa Margarita increased from 47,214 at the 2000 census to 47,442 at the 2021 census. Despite being named after Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores, which was located in San Diego County, the city limits lie within Rancho Mission Viejo. The longest city name in California contains 20 characters (22 including spaces).
The total area of the city is 13,0 square miles (34 km2). It contains 13.0 square miles (34 km2) of land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) of water (0.27%). Rancho Santa Margarita is bounded on the west by Mission Viejo, on the south by Coto de Caza and Las Flores, on the north by Trabuco Canyon, and on the east by Cleveland National Forest.
In addition to several surface streets, California State Route 241 (a toll road) provides vehicular access.
Like most of southern California, Rancho Santa Margarita has a Mediterranean climate.
The City of Rancho Santa Margarita is a master-planned community in South Orange County. Residents come to Rancho Santa Margarita for the high quality of life, safe neighborhoods, and community events, while others come for the abundance of trails and parks.
Although based in Coto De Caza, The Real Housewives of Orange County is primarily filmed in Rancho Santa Margarita, where many of the housewives conduct business, shop, commute, visit the dentist, and dine.
