Rancho Santa Margarita is a city in the United States Orange County. It is one of Orange County’s youngest cities. It was incorporated in 2000 and became Orange County’s 33rd municipality. The population of Rancho Santa Margarita increased from 47,214 at the 2000 census to 47,442 at the 2021 census. Despite being named after Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores, which was located in San Diego County, the city limits lie within Rancho Mission Viejo. The longest city name in California contains 20 characters (22 including spaces).

Rancho Santa Margarita is bounded on the west by Mission Viejo, on the south by Coto de Caza and Las Flores, on the north by Trabuco Canyon, and on the east by Cleveland National Forest.
