A root canal is a dental procedure that repairs and saves infected teeth. A root canal treatment involves taking out the infected tooth pulp and then cleaning and disinfecting the tooth. The treated tooth is then filled and sealed to protect it permanently. Getting a root canal treats the pain, swelling, and sensitivity caused by a damaged and infected tooth.

A root canal treatment involves using a local anesthetic so you do not experience pain during the procedure. A root canal helps you chew better, normalizes the force of your bite, and protects your tooth from damage and wear. Dr. Ronald Ayzin of  Laguna Dental Center is an expert in doing root canal treatments since 2017.

What is a Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal (endodontic therapy) is a dental treatment used to save and repair infected teeth. Root canal therapy removes the pulp of the tooth that is inflamed or infected. The inside of the tooth is first cleansed and disinfected before being filled and sealed. Preserving your tooth with root canal therapy improves your ability to chew, restores normal force and sensation in your bite, and guards your other teeth against damage or wear.

Do I Need Root Canal Treatment?

Emergency Root Canal is required when dangerous bacteria reach the pulp of your tooth and create infection or abscess. Untreated cavities frequently lead to dental abscesses or infections. These are the warning signs and symptoms that your tooth requires a root canal.

  • Lasting tooth pain. Visit your root canal dentist for deep tooth pain to determine whether root canal therapy is necessary. This dental pain extends to other teeth, your jaw, and your face and indicates nerve damage around your tooth pulp. Feeling discomfort when you eat or touch your tooth is another sign that you need a root canal.
  • Sensitivity to heat and cold. Damaged teeth are more sensitive to hot and cold food and beverages. Dental pain that lasts for more than a few seconds is felt with this tooth sensitivity.
  • Inflammation of gums and jaw. Swelling and soreness of the gums and adjacent structures are frequent signs of infection. Another indication of infection is the presence of a pimple or boil on the gums. A bad taste or smell results when pus pours from a boil or pimple.
  • Discoloration of the tooth. Your tooth will appear darker if you have a damaged tooth pulp because of the impeded blood supply.
  • A chip or crack on the tooth. Infection results from bacteria getting into your tooth pulp as a result of trauma or injury.
  • Loose tooth. An infected tooth feels looser because the bone that supports it softens.

What to Expect in a Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal is a safe treatment performed by a dentist for root canal or endodontist. We have 6 steps in our root canal procedure here in Laguna Dental Center.

  1. Taking dental x-rays. Our dental assistant takes digital x-rays to be evaluated by Dr. Ronald Ayzin.
  2. Applying local anesthesia. A local anesthetic is applied to numb the area to be treated. Sedation anesthesia is used if you are experiencing anxiety about the root canal treatment.
  3. Exposing the canal. A tiny hole is drilled through the tooth enamel to expose the affected pulp and release pressure to relieve pain.
  4. Cleaning and disinfecting the tooth and root canal. The tooth’s infected nerve tissue and pulp material are removed. The root canal is then completely cleaned and disinfected.
  5. Filling and sealing the tooth temporarily. The empty root canal is temporarily filled and sealed to prevent infection or the formation of an abscess. Temporary restoration and sutures are used to cover the tooth to protect it as it heals. A permanent crown will be ready for final sealing on your next visit.
  6. Filling and sealing permanently. You will have a permanent crown placed on the treated tooth to complete its final restoration.
